AXIS PRISONERS IN AUSTRALIA

Majority Engaged In Work (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 9. The majority of the 18,800 prisoners of war and enemy internees held in Australia have been put to work, according to the Minister of the Army, Mr F. M. Forde. Among those at work were 10,000 Italians, 1400 Germans and 1100 Japanese. The Japanese comprised 600 soldiers captured in the South-west Pacific area and 500 merchant seamen. About 3000 Italian prisoners were doing rural work for private employers without guards. Guards were kept on German and Japanese prisoners.
