The South African Armoured Division’s record of Rugby successes was rudely shattered by the New Zealand Maadl Camp team in the final test of the Middle East season, the Kiwis defeating the Springboks by 13 points (three tries and two conversions) to four (a field goal). A crowd of 16,000 at Cairo’s Alameln Club witnessed the New Zealanders outplay the South Africans in every department of the game. J. Smith, New Zealand hooker, gave his backs every chance to make play. Tries were scored by Bergham, Smith and Wilkie, Smith converting two. A Cairo newspaper commented: Those Kiwi forwards were immense. They packed down like lions waiting for a meal of early Christian martyrs, giving their opponents no time to set their scrummaging machine working smoothly.”
