PATRIOTIC RACE MEETINGS
Allocation Of Proceeds The distribution of funds from patriotic race meetings was discussed at a meeting of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday. It was stated that as a result of the patriotic meeting conducted by the Southland Racing Club about £1250 had been forwarded to the general patriotic pool in Wellington. The funds were to be distributed to provincial centres of the National Patriotic Fund Board throughout New Zealand. Mr D. W. Stalker said it was understood that funds from all patriotic race meetings were sent to the general pool, and then amounts were allocated to each provincial patriotic council. To his knowledge there had been about six patriotic meetings held in Canterbury alone and yet Southland had so far received no allocation. “It appears that the ‘pool’ system was started shortly before the Southland meeting,” said Mr Stalker. “Our council should make inquiries about what has been done with the funds from other meetings.” The position would be quite satisfactory if arrangements had been made to allocations to every district from the proceeds of all patriotic meetings. Mr E. E. Boyd said that in his opinion the only councils entitled to an allocation those contributing to the general po’bl. “It is a wonderful system if Canterbury and other provinces put their own proceeds into their pockets, and then receive an allocation from the proceeds of the Southland patriotic meeting,” said the secretary, Mr W. F. Sturman. It was decided to make full inquiries about the matter from Mr G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board.
