ANNUAL HOLIDAYS BILL

Legislative Council’s Amendments (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 31. The Legislative Council today passed the Annual Holidays Bill with amendments. These provide that an annual holiday may be taken in two periods of one week or that a holiday may be taken in advance before the end of the year for which it is allowed; that holiday pay for periods under one year shall be paid in cash and not by stamps in all cases except where the total period of employment is less than three months broken period. At the end of one or more complete years of employment a worker will be entitled to holiday pay in cash; and that social and national security taxation is deductible from the amount of the stamps (affixed only where the total period of employment is less than three months) when they are cashed by the post office. An employer will not make any deduction,, but will affix stamps for the full amount of holiday pay. Speaking to the third reading of the Bill the Hon. T. F. Doyle (Bluff) said he regretted very much that there was no provision to cover every section of the workers of New Zealand. There were no more overworked section of the community than the mothers; they should receive an annual holiday. The Legislative Council also passed the Invercargill Licensing Trust Bill and the Government Railways Amendment Bill without amendment.
