BEING SENT HOME
American Troops With Two Years’ Service (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 3. American troops, with two years’ service in the Pacific war zone, are being sent home and will be replaced by fresh troops. This was revealed by Lieuten-ant-General Harmon, who is visiting Washington for staff talks. Lieutenant-General Harmon said that the rotation depended on combat requirements and transportation facilities. The programme was initiated on a scale commensurate with the means available. As the means increased the programme would be expanded.
Lieutenant-General Harmon stated that 60 per cent, of the air personnel shot down in Japanese territory in the south Pacific have been rescued, some with the help of natives and others by navy patrol bombers which frequently landed under fighter cover in enemy harbours, picking up airmen under the noses of the Japanese. The enemy had apparently replaced their plane losses in the New Britain and New Ireland areas, either from reserves or new production. However, enemy air equipment was still inferior.
