Squadron Leader S. G. Quill, who commanded the New Zealand Fighter Squadron which has done a strenuous tour of operations in the Solomons area, is expected to arrive in Invercargill at the end of the week. His mother, Mrs V. Quill, lives in Tay street.

Colonel A. A. Tennent, N.Z.M.C., accompanied by his wife, is at present visiting Invercargill aftex* service in New Caledonia. He is a guest at the Grand Hotel. Colonel Tennent has been officer commanding the No. 4 General Hospital, which was established in New Caledonia upon the arrival of New Zealand troops. He was a prisoner of war in Italy for some time, but was repatriated in August 1942. He later returned to New Zealand for two months as Assistant Director of Medical Services for a division. Colonel Tennent was married in Wellington on August 4 to Miss Elza Martin, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. T. Martin, of Wellington. Mr Martin is chairman of directors of Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd. Colonel Tennent will leave en route to New Caledonia tomorrow. Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), W. J. Mathers (secretary) and S. D. Macpherson and H. H. Gillard (members) of the Industrial Man-power Committee, arrived in Invercargill from Dunedin by the , express last night. The committee will sit in Invercargill this morning and will return to Dunedin this afternoon. Cabled advice has been received by Mi* and Mrs P. G. Kimble, of Nelson street, that their son, Leading Aircraftman Martin M. Kimble, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has arrived at his destination safe and well. Lance-Bombardier N. L.. McKnight, who has been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the Middle East, was born in Invercargill and educated at the Waihopai School. His parents, Mr and Mrs L. S. McKnight, live in Hensley street. He was contracting at the Hollyford Valley when he enlisted three years ago. His wife lives in Collingwood A motion of sympathy with Mr James Robertson in the death of his mother was passed by the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society last night.

Reference to the death of Mr J. H. Reed was made at a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce yesterday by the chairman (Mr J. N. Armour). Mr Reed was continuously a member of the council for 30 years, said Mr Armour. He was elected vicepresident in 1916 and president in 1917 and occupied the chair on three or four separate occasions over the years. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mr Reed.
