Sporting MELBOURNE CUP HANDICAP

AMORLAD AND THE JOKER A noticeable feature of the handicapping of New Zealand horses for the Melbourne Cup is the weight (8.9) allotted The Joker, who receives 21b from Amorlad. The performances of the two horses, especially over long distances, can hardly be compared. The Joker was fourth. in the New Zealand Cup, two miles, and won the Wellington Cup, Metropolitan Handicap, and Great Autumn Handicap, all over a mile and a-half, his total earnings for the season being £3970. Amorlad won three open races over a mile and a-quarter at Riverton, and one over a mile and two furlongs and a half at Dunedin, and with these and his two successes in hack company, his earnings for the season amount to £1913. On form, The Joker must be considered one of the best stayers, but Amorlad has not been beyond a middle distance. Strangely enough, in the Caulfield Cup, one mile and a-half. The Joker is called on to give Amorlad 21b. There is no doubt The Joker was one of the best treated, horses throughout the last season, and his owner has certainly received a cordial invitation to get his horse to Melbourne, comments a northern writer. As far as Amorlad is concerned, any earlier idea of sending him over is not likely to be proceeded with. INQUIRY “British Empire” (Otautau).-—A brown horse, bred in England, in 1925, by SunstarBritish First, by Swynford-Conciliation, by William The Third-Brilliante, by Prince Rudolph. He was imported from Australia in 1929. HEARTH Hearth, who has been nominated for the Winter Cup, has not had a race since last March, when she ran unplaced at Trentham. DATES ALLOTTED In the allocation of dates for next season the Auckland and Avondale Clubs, racing at Ellerslie, have received 11 days, Wellington seven. Canterbury six, and the Dunedin Jockey Club five. A SPEEDY FILLY

Flying Ace, the -runaway winner of the Trial Plate at Trentham on Saturday, is a three-year-old filly by Bulandshar from Lady Oratress, and is trained by L. G. Morris for Mr T. A. Duncan. In her previous eight starts she had one win, a maiden event at Otaki, three second placings, and one third. COMPARISONS

The nominations for this year’s Grand National Steeplechase totalled 22 (as against 27 last year), for the Winter Cup 49 (48), and for the Grand National Hurdles 29 127). RENASCOR

Renascor, the winner of last year’s Grand National Hurdles, is the only one of last year’s field engaged in this year’s race. Kanui Te Pai won the Sydenham Hurdles on the first day, but was withdrawn from the National Hurdles.

ERINATION Erination, who will be 14 years old when the Grand National is run next month, is the veteran of the field. Gay Boa and Dozie Boy will be 12, Golden Glow and Valens 11, Bow Street, Chat, Half and Half, Mataimat, Slayer and Valentua 10, Anini, Auctor and Master Lackham 9, Hyderabad, Spendthrift and The Cardinal 8, Benevolent 7, Abbey Lu, Anglo-French and Noko 6, and Red Glare 5 years old. BARRIER POSITIONS

At last week’s Racing Conference, the Manawatu Racing Club submitted a remit to provide that the order of positions at the post from which horses shall start should be determined by lot immediately after the closing of acceptances. The mover pointed out that by so doing excessive fields might be reduced as a result of the defection of horses badly drawn. The remit was lost by a big majority. UNLUCKY CONTESTANTS

When Broker’s Dream fell at the home turn in the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham, he interfered with The Monarch and Airport, and both lost ground. The Monarch made a game effort and was considered unlucky to be beaten into third place, only a length from the winner, Platform. Flying Spy, who was sent to the outside, jumped across the field at the start and ruined the chances of Stairway, Kinsman, Coronace, Noble Fox and Hippodrome. JOCKEYS INJURED

Three jockeys were injured in falls at Trentham on Saturday. A. Jenkins, rider of Abbey Lu, which fell in the July Steeplechase, broke a collarbone. I. Galvin, who fell from Broker’s Dream at the home turn during the running of the Parliamentary Handicap, suffered slight concussion and was removed to hospital for observation. Galvin had a lucky escape from serious injury as his mount was disputing the lead and the remainder of the field of 21 swept over him while he was on the ground. Slight concussion was also suffered by O. Mclnally, who fell with Hunting Comet in the Corunna Hurdles. Two races later Mclnally rode Rich Blood in the Winter Hurdles, and he also rode Radiant Bay in the July Steeplechase.
