WAR EXPENDITURE OF AUSTRALIA

Total Of £1,106,000,000 To Date (Rec. 10.15 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 12. The cost of the war to Australia to the end of the last financial year, ending on June 30, has been £1,100,000,000. During the year just ended the Commonwealth’s war expenditure totalled £561,787,000. A central bank credit of nearly £216,000,000 was issued to finance the war expenditure while the Budget revenue provided nearly £160,000,000. The balance, over £400,000,000, came from loan funds borrowed within Australia. Of this amount about half was raised by public subscription. War expenditure rose by more than £242,000,000 in 1942-43 compared with the previous 12 months.
