MANAWATU RIVERS OVERFLOW

Low-Lying Land Flooded (P.A.) PALMERSTON N, July 12. Prolonged rain over the week-end and melting snow on the RUahine ranges resulted in the Manawatu, Pohangina and Oroua rivers all flooding together. The Manawatu peak was 14 feet at Palmerston North, but prospects for the lower reaches in the vicinity of Foxton are not bright. All three rivers are pouring their surplus over the spillways into low-lying farm lands. The Oroua river overflowed its banks in the Kopane area and the eastern approach to the bridge giving access to Rongotea is scoured out, necessitating a long detour.

Manawatu and Oroua River Board officials deplore rumours of an alarming nature which were broadcast, thus undermining the accurate information which they try to give settlers. This is the third flood in a fortnight in which settlers in the lower areas have had to suffer.
