NOKOS BRILLIANT WIN SOLID PERFORMANCE BY PLATFORM (Special) WELLINGTON, July 11._ Visitors from far afield won the four main races at Trentham. Southland took the Parliamentary Handicap with Platform and the July Steeplechase with Noko and the Auckland district took the Winter Hurdles with Town Survey and the Members’ Handicap with Peter Gregor. The Great Northern Hurdles winner. Town Survey, was pressed by Authoress to win the Winter Hurdles, but he did his work comfortably throughout and probably had something in hand at the post. His stable mate, Rich Blood, made play early, but when he retired Town Survey went up to test Black Musk in the lead and Authoress joined them also. Two fences from home Town Survey and Authoress singled themselves out after crossing the last fence and Town Survey safely held the Hastings mare and won by a short length. Talents came from behind to cut Black Musk down for third money, and after Black Musk came Young Charles about five lengths away. Colibri fell a mile and a-quarter from home and the favourite, Renascor, toiled along at the rear throughout and had only Rich Blood behind him at the end. Noko gave a good exhibition to win the July Steeplechase. Bisquit set out to win all the way and at most of the fences gave a dashing display of jumping. He was always well clear until the six furlongs post on the last round where Abbey Lu and Noko joined issue with him. Abbey Lu fell at the brush fence near the five furlongs post and from that stage it was a contest between Bisquit and Noko and the lastnamed outstayed the northerner and beat him by a length. Half and Half, who was always running prominently, was third and Hyderabad was fourth. Spendthrift was trailing the leader for two miles and ahalf, but tired and did not complete the course, nor did Radiant Bay. The Cardinal fell a round from home. PLATFORM’S WIN The Parliamentary Handicap was won in solid style by Platform, who assisted with most of the pace and then ran on well under pressure to win from Fiddler’s Green and The Monarch, who had fought out the Whyte Handicap. Fairy Bard, Platform, Broker’s Dream, The Monarch, Fiddler’s Green, Indian Sport, Landveyor and Air Port was the order into the back stretch. Coming across the top from the half-mile Fiddler’s Green, Platform, Broker’s Dream and Fairy Bard were almost abreast in front and when they turned for home Broker’s Dream dropped his rider and in the ensuing mix-up The Monarch and Air Port appeared to get the worst of it. At this stage Platform dashed clear and at the last furlong Fiddler’s Green, The Monarch and Landveyor came on again to lodge hot challenges, but Platform never looked like submitting and he won by half a length from Fiddler’s Green, with a similar margin to The Monarch. Landveyor was a close fourth and was followed in by Air Port, Piastre, Noble Fox, Kinsman, Stairway, Alethea and Coronace.

Peter Gregor survived in a hard finish with Gaymiss, Monte Cristo and Minority ! in the Members’ Handicap. He was out smartly and at the end of a furlong had established a clear lead from Sham Boy, Symbol, Autolite. Whackie, Monte Cristo, Bashful Lady,’ Gaymiss, Minority and Pom- , pit, the two last-named having got away badly. Peter Gregor was never deposed, but he had to be hard ridden to stall off Gaymiss who, after being one of the first to jump out, drifted in the middle stages and then came home brilliantly and appeared very unlucky. Monte Cristo and Minority also finished fast and they tied for third, only a neck behind Gaymiss. Autolite was fifth, with Symbol and Pomplt next. EASTERN "SOUTHLAND HUNT CLUB Judging from the pace set, the opportunity to give their mounts a work-out for the coming point-to-point meeting was taken by a number of the followers at the meet conducted by the Eastern Southland Hunt Club on the property of Mr J. G. Scott (Ferndale) on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal for hunting and during the afternoon two drag runs were held. Jumping competitions were also conducted. A pleasing feature was the number of followers from the Redan-Mokoreta district. Those following were: Messrs W. Wayte (huntsman) on Full Flight, A. Dodds (whip) on Paddy, Misses J. Horne on Sparkling Lad, P. McCallum on Florian, B. Henry on Gold Feather, Messrs R. Ford on Banjo, T. M. Kelly on Court Talk, J. Burke on Rampon, N. Kelly on Anon, A. E. Whiteley on Lady Friend, C. LARGE FIELDS MORE PRONOUNCED Balloting Advocated “Larger fields and division races have been more pronounced this year than ever before,” states the annual report of the president of the Racing Conference (Mr H. R. Chalmers), submitted to the meeting of the Racing Conference in Wellington. “In this matter some action by the conference may be necessary, but I am of the opinion that these are domestic matters, and it is for the clubs concerned to deal with them as what suits one club may not. suit another. Personally, I am of the opinion that that division races should be avoided and that elimination, either by ballot or by some other means is the only way to deal with the position,” continues the report. “In reading the reports of stipendiary stewards on the various meetings held, I have been struck by the number of cases of interference which have been referred to in these reports, and I cannot help thinking that stewards of clubs are far too loath to use their powers under Rule 285 to alter the placings where a placed horse or its rider has interfered with the chances of any other placed horse or horses. “Another satisfactory feature during the year’s racing has been that many clubs have been unable to keep their time schedule up to date and in more than a few cases, the last race has been run half an hour and more after the advertised time, indeed in one or two cases more than an hour late. This is most unsatisfactory and 'it is not fair to the riders, owners, horses, the public the Railways Department which in these days provide the only means of transit to and from courses, and particularly unfair to judges who may have to pick the placed horses in a failing or failed light.” SUCCESSFUL - MEETING AT WINTON BRANCH OF BIRCHWOOD HUNT Ideal weather was experienced for the Birchwood Hunt meeting conducted by the Winton branch of the hunt at the. Winton racecourse on Saturday. The racing was interesting throughout and the funds collected, amounting to about £56, were donated to patriotic funds. In presenting the prizes the president of the Southland Birchwood Hunt, Mr J. J. Woods, thanked those who supplied prizes, which included Liperty Loan bonds from Mrs W. Swale.
