MEN’S HOCKEY

HIGH SCHOOL DEFEATS BLUES Men’s hockey matches in the junior and senior grade were played at Queen’s Park on Saturday. The bad state of the grounds prevented play of a high standard, but the two senior matches played during the afternoon were fairly interesting and, considering the state of the grounds, surprisingly fast. Technical, showing a vast improvement in the standard of play were defeated by Whites 8-5. Whites were, however, mainly superior and were not unduly extended to win. The combination of the Whites forward line was good, but Sinclair, the centre forward, and Pettigrew, the inside left, were outstanding. These two players worked in unison and Whites scored most of its goals as a result of Pettigrew’s crisp centring shots .and Sinclair’s preparedness in front of the goalmouth. Calvert, the Technical centre-for-ward and Patton, the left wing, played sound hockey. For Whites goals were scored by Sinclair (4), Pettigrew (2), Kelman and Morison, and for Technical by Calvert (2), Patton (2) and Michel. The umpires were Messrs W. R. Curwen and G. J. Hope. In a game that was slightly less ragged than usual High School defeated Blues 6-3. The game was fairly fast but High School were slightly superior until the last 15 minutes when it was far superior to Blues. Rennick and Skelt in the backs for Blues played well and Mason, although he did not get much support, played outstandingly and scored two good goals. Bainbridge, the High School full-back, was sound in his defensive play. Allen, the centre-half, Ott, centre-for-ward and Craig, right wing, played consistently well. The scorers for High School were Ott (2), Sturman (2), Allen and Aitchison, and for Blues, Mason (2) and Cook. The umpires were Messrs A. E. Dakin and J. Chisnail. JUNIOR MATCHES Murihiku drew with High School B, 4-4. Scorers: Murihiku, Vial (2) and Crawford (2). High School, Payne (2), Barrett and Lindsay. The umpires were Messrs A. E. Dakin and J. Pettigrew. High School A defeated Technical, 3-2. Scorers: —High School, Semmens (2) and Drees. Technical, Michel and Cunningham. The umpires were Messrs W. R. Curwen and N. Poole. WOMEN’S MATCHES Gore High School A suffered their first defeat for four years at the hands of a team of Invercargill players, by four goals to nil. Invercargill was superior, but good combination was lacking in both teams. Play was hampered by the slippery state of the grounds. In the second half, Gore played an improved game and infused a little interest into the game by aggressive play. Goals were scored for Invercargill by A Shaw (2) and M. Howie (2). The umpires were Messrs H. Kelly and G. J. Hope. Gore High School B overwhelmingly defeated a team of junior Invercargill players by 18 goals to nil. On several occasions the game was almost brought to a standstill by the state of the' grounds. The scorers for Gore were V. Ball (10), N. Spence (4), F. Patterson, M. Wayte and V. Wayte.
