NEW ZEALAND PILOT’S DELAYED DROP

(Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW DELHI, July 11. Warrant Officer F. D. C. Brown, R.A.F., of Canterbury, aged . 21, who fell from his plane unconscious for a distance of 20,000 feet over the Burma front, unwittingly made a record delayed drop. Warrant Officer Brown said: “My plane got into a violent storm with lightning playing around. Conditions were pretty bumpy. The plane suddenly got into a spin and though I applied ‘correction’ it worsened. I was thrown on to the controls, hitting my head, and lost consciousness. The next thing I knew I was falling in thick clouds. Suddenly I saw the ground 3000 feet below and managed to open my parachute.” On the ground Bengalis feted Warrant Officer Brown as some strange aerial visitor. He received melons, bananas, rice and tea. The Bengalis tended Warrant Officer Brown until next day, when he made a 24-hour bullock-cart and sampan journey to hospital.
