AWARDED D.F.M.

Invercargill Airman Decorated According to advice received by Mr and Mrs F. J. Gunn, of Mary street, Invercargill, their son has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. After preliminary training with the Air Force in New Zealand, Sergeant Gunn left for Canada two years ago. He later went to England and then saw service in the Middle East. He is at present on active service in India. Sergeant Gunn is the rear-gunner of a bomber crew, but during his service in England he was the gunner of a night fighter. His last letter to his mother, received in Invercargill about two months ago stated that he was enjoying leave within sight of Mount Everest. In one of his letters to his mother he said that the first and second pilots of the crew of which he was a member had been decorated. Some time ago a newsreel screened in Invercargill depicting scenes, of a Canadian aerodrome included glimpses of Sergeant Gunn. Born in Invercargill 25 years ago Sergeant Gunn was educated at the South school and the Southland Technical College. He was employed on various farms after leaving school and at the time of joining the Air Force he was employed by Mr S. Lynch, of Riversdale. He was an expert rifle shot and was a member of rifle clubs at Riversdale and Mossburn before the war.
