INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERS

At the annual meeting of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers the following office-bearers were elected:—Chairman, Mr A. T. Gandell; secretary and treasurer, Mr D. L. Grant; auditor, Mr W. H. Gregory: executive committee, Messrs G. T. Baker and G. R. Milward.

Papers were recently presented to the branch by Mr W. H. Gregory (“National Supply Undertakings in New Zealand”) and by Mr D. Kennedy, Greymouth ("Quarry Working and Layout”). The former paper dealt with the historical aspect of power development, the economics of hydro•power, lake control with reference to Taupo and Lake Monowai, general administration of power undertakings by the Government Department and power supply authorities, rural electrification, system operation and maintenance and the technical considerations involved.

Mr Kennedy’s paper dealt with the development of the Greymouth Harbour Board quarry at Cobden and the use made of the stone in the building of the north and south breakwaters at the entrance of the Grey river.
