FREEZING WORKER’S DEATH

Further Developments Likely

(Special) OAMARU, April 8. Further developments are likely in consequence of the death at the Oamaru public hospital on Tuesday of Eric Courtney Devlin, aged about 27, a slaughterman employed at the Pukeuri freezing works. Devlin was admitted to hospital on Monday, being treated for cerebral haemorrhage. He died at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and at that time there was no indication of how a head injury had been received. Subsequently it became known that the deceased had been injured at Port Chalmers on the previous Saturday night. It is understood that he was found lying in the street at 1 a.m. on Sunday, but apparently he was well enough to return to Oamaru by the night express on Sunday. On arrival at Oamaru he went to his lodging, where he complained of pains in the head, as a result of which a doctor was sent for and ordered his removal to hospital. How the deceased received the injury is not known by the Oamaru police, who state that investigations are being made by the Dunedin police. It has been alleged that the deceased received his injury in a fracas, but this is not officially confirmed in Oamaru.
