ANGLERS CONCERNED

Destruction Of Fish By Shags

A complaint that shags were “skinning” the rivers of small fish was made in a letter from Mr E. Garthwaite, of Athol, received at the meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society last night. Mr Garthwaite asked if it would be possible for him to obtain cartridges to kill the shags. The acting secretary. Mr G. Osborne, said he had informed Mr Garthwaite that there was no chance of the society obtaining cartridges for him. Mr Eustace Russell said he doubted whether shags were responsible for the disappearance of small fish. In his experience, which extended over 40 years, shags went for the larger fish. Several members expressed the opinion that shags were increasing and were destroying many fish. It was decided to apply for 1000 cartridges for the society’s rangers to shoot shags.
