Notes for Women

Mrs F. A. Fairbairn and Miss P. Fairbalm are at present spending a holiday at Queenstown. Mrs Clifford Helm and her son Noel have returned to Christchurch from a holiday visit at Invercargill. Mrs J. K. Hay. Herbert street, who has been visiting Mrs J. H. Sutton, Moa Flat, has returned home.

Miss Margaret Just and Miss A. Duthie were hostesses in Dimedin for Miss Betty Semmens, Tweed street, who is to be married shortly. The Mother's Club of the Lindisfarne Kindergarten, Mitchell street, made a presentation to a member of the staff, Miss Betty Semmens, at a meeting held yesterday. The Governor-General and Lady Newall attended a church parade at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul on Sunday for the voluntary aids visiting Wellington, the service being taken by Canon D. J. Davies. Another church parade took place at the Church of St. Mary and the Angels, Boulcott street. Both were largely attended. The annual meeting of women teachers was held at the Middle School yesterday, Mrs E. K. Mills presiding. Miss R. McAllister, supervisor of the infant departments of schools, was the speaker for the afternoon. She gave a most interesting talk on ‘‘The Humours of the Road.” On behalf of those present Mrs Mills presented Miss McAllister with a spray. On Tuesday afternoon Miss C. McLeod, M.A., who has resigned from the Southland Technical College Board of Managers, was the guest of the principal (Mr C. A. Stewart), Mrs Stewart and the staff of the Southland Technical College at afternoon tea. Miss R. M. Blackie, senior mistress, and other staff representatives spoke of the value of Miss McLeod's services to the school during her 13 years as a member of the Board of Managers, stressing her keen interest in the school and her sympathetic understanding, more especially of the needs of the girls and the women teachers. Special reference was made to her help in the building up and housing of the library. Good wishes were expressed for her well-being in her retirement. As a parting gift the staff presented the guest with a handbag and a Victorian posy. Miss McLeod assured the teachers that her work on the board and in association with the staff had been a pleasure to her and that she deeply regretted having to retire. From Auckland to as far south as Invercargill, Red Gross voluntary aids travelled to Wellington for the inspection parade held at Government House on Saturday afternoon before her Excellency Lady Newall, their commandant-in-chlef. Because of unsettled weather the march past in the grounds had to be cancelled and the function took place in the ballroom, more than 600 voluntary aids and their officers being drawn up in closely packed ranks. Their Excellencies were both present and Lady Newall, as commandant-in-chief, was presented with a gold and enamel badge embodying a New Zealand design, by Mr C. G. White, Dominion chairman of the Red Cross Society. Mr White expressed the hope that her Excellency’s connection with the voluntary aids would be a happy one and full of interest. The society was proud of the fact that the body under her command, was now no inconsiderable force, numbering 8000. "I would like to express my great appreciation of the presentation badge.” Lady Newall said. “I thank you very much and will wear it with great pride and I shall try to be more worthy of all it means and stands for.”
