WOMEN DRAFTED FOR WORK 300 To Start In Sydney Canneries (Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 7. Three hundred women between the ages of 18 and 35 have been drafted to start work in Sydney canneries on Monday. None of the women is gainfully employed and they are considered to have little domestic responsibility. It is expected that Australia will apply compulsion of female labour on a wholesale scale within the next few weeks. This is the first mass drafting that has been made to cope with the hundreds of tons of peaches which will shortly pour into the canneries. “If the peaches are not processed immediately they will rot,” explained a senior man-power official. “Australia cannot afford such a colossal waste of food.” RED CROSS NEWS An invitation is extended to all members of the Red Cross Society and members of the various V.A. detachments to attend (in uniform) this evening at 7.15 at the Town Hall, the occasion being the official ceremony to mark the gift of an ambulance for service in the Middle East.
