He visited New Zealand and Australia on behalf of the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music in 1939. He was 64 years of age. CAPTAIN J. W 11. HOLMES A well-known master mariner, Captain Joseph William Henry Holmes, of Auckland, died suddenly last week, aged 68. Captain Holmes was born in Liverpool and went to sea in sail in 1890, reaching the rank of chief officer. He then joined the Union Steam Ship Company, Limited, and commanded a number of its vessels, the last being the inter-island ferry steamer Mararoa. Leaving the sea, he was for a time a surveyor of ships for the Marine Department, but resigned to become marine superintendent of the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Frozen Meat and Mercantile Company, Limited. After the outbreak of the present war he went back to sea as a matter of duty and commanded a vessel in the intercolonial trade until three weeks ago, when he retired on account of age. A member of the Auckland Bowling Club, Captain Holmes had many tournament successes. His wife and two daughters survive him, and there are two grandchildren.
