ARMED FORCES BOARD

APPEALS HEARD AT GORE The majority of the appeals heard by the Southland Armed Forces Appeal Board at a sitting at Gore yesterday v/ere by or on behalf of farmers or farm workers. Sine die adjournments were granted in a big number of cases. The board spent a busy day and did not adjourn until a late hour last night. Mr E. H. Murney presided' and with him were Messrs D. H. Cockburn and D. W. Stalker. Mr J. W. Hinchey conducted the cases for the Crown. The following appeals were adjourned sine die:—Clarence Myers Anton, farmer, Gore; Adam Hamilton Ferguson, farmer, Kelso (appeal also made by Kelso Primary Production Council); C. E. An application by the Kelso Primary Production Council for the release from camp of Milton O. Hood was declined. A representative of the Army Department produced a telegram showing that the reservist had no desire to be released from camp. The following appeals by the manager of the Tapanui linen flax factory were adjourned sine die:—Lawrence Bently Heenan, lorry driver; Roy Martin McDonald, foreman; Clarence Ivan Parry, first class hand; Thomas Edward Stiven, first class stacker. The following appeals were ' treated as withdrawn: —S. F. J. Korrell, farmer, Knapdale, for John Robert Henderson, farm, hand (as at April 30, 1943); John Frago, student, Gore (as at December 31). The board recommended an extension to January 31, 1943, for Ernest Desmond Hewlett. who had been released from camp until November 30 for farm duties, on the application of William B. Whyte, fanner, Black Hills.

The following cases were adjourned to March 31, 1943:—John Leslie Allan, farmer, Charlton; Robert William Bagrie, farmer and shearer, Waipahi; Clarence Edward Scarlet, farmer, Knapdale; Anthony Thomas Kubala, farmer, Croydon Bush. The following appeals were dismissed:— Wright. Stephenson and Co., Ltd.. Dunedin; for Eric James Irving, manager, Kelso branch (as at March 31, 1943). An appeal by Tennyson Andrew Brownlie, garage proprietor, Heriot, was adjourned to April 30, 1943.
