WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL

Monthly Meeting At the monthly meeting of the Wallace County Council, the chairman (Mr E. K. Sim) moved that in view of the powers invested in local bodies, Mr F. Anderson be appointed to fill the vacancy in Aparima riding caused by the resignation of Cr Gould. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Invercargill, wrote stating that the matter of giving formed road access to section 152, block 2, Longwood sub-division, held under a Land Act lease, did not come within the province of his department. He pointed out that Mr Ferguson did not live on section 152, but in a residential area held under the Mining Act, quite close to the Shale Company’s buildings, and probably this was the land to which formed road access was required. The engineer (Mr J. G. C. Baker) said that some years ago various improvements to Crown lands were carried out with goldfields revenue, and there was no trouble over roads. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the riding member. Mr P. Chamberlain, Orawia, wrote stating that representations had been made to the council about a road reserve near the Orawia bridge on which to build a church. He had been advised by the Public Works Department that it could not accede to the request, as the land would probably be required when the present bridge was replaced. He asked for the assistance of the council in the matter. ' Cr Sim said a communication had been received that if at any time the bridge had to be renewed it would have to cut through the section. He 'was of the opinion, however, that there was still room for a church site. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the riding member and' engineer. The Ohai Railway Board wrote advising that it adhered to the resolution offering to pay to the council half of the amount actually borne by it in respect of the repairs to the culvert near Crawford’s siding. It was decided to demand payment for half the cost of the actual work. The Waikato Hospital Board wrote about the incidence of hospital taxation, and it was agreed to support the proposal that additional money be paid by the Social Security Department to relieve hospital boards. ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer reported as follows: Since last meeting the weather, except for a bad storm, continued mild, and road surfaces are as usual. The old bridge in the Gorge at Burwood and the northern approach to Whare Creek bridge at Redcliff have again been damaged by freshes. About the same time an old one-span bridge on the Happy Valley road, Tuatapere, over a branch of Camp Creek at Mr C. E. Knowler’s farm, completely collapsed, and a new bridge is now being built at this place, using ironbark beams and concrete for abutments. The short stretches of road at the four dairy factories previously mentioned are now being got ready for sealing.
