SOUTHLAND ANGLERS’ CLUB
PROSPECTS FOR PROMISING SEASON "The indications are very promising for the incoming season,” declared the president (Mr G. Friend) of the Southland Anglers’ Club at the annual meeting and social on Saturday night. /‘The past season has been a very difficult one from the club’s point of view. A large number of our members are with the armed forces, and this, coupled with the restricted travel facilities, and the abnormal condition of our streams, compelled the club to abandon the competitions and excursions.” Three competitions were held in the early part of the season, he said. An excursion by train was held at Parawa. Altogether 107 members from different clubs participated. On that occasion 25 returned soldiers from Greece and Crete were taken as the guests of the club. Fishing, eeiing and casting competitions were held through the day, which was voted a huge success. The membership increased during the year from 41 to 120 and the balance-sheet showed a credit of £3B/8/5. The election of office-bearers resulted:— Patron, Mr A. Wachner; president, Mr G. Friend; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Aitken and E. Luzmoor; committee, Messrs C. J. Blomfield. G. Hoffman, Martin, Walker, Meffan, Ballantyne and McConechy; .secretary, Mr G. Stupples. SOCIAL FUNCTION At the social function held after the annual meeting trophies won during the year were presented to W. McKenzie (Gore), winner of the Parawa Cup, and G. Friend, for casting. The following toast list was honoured:— "The Armed Forces”; "Our Patron” (Mr G. Friend-Mr A. Wachner); “Southland Acclimatization Society” (Mr W. Archer-Mr W. McKenzie): “Visiting Clubs—Ohai, Waiau and Gore" (Mr J. Loudon); "Kindred Clubs” (Mr A. Scott-Mr B. Kidd); “Southland Angling Club”: "Performers” and "Chairman.”
