Mrs A. Dickson, Christchurch, is spending a holiday in Invercargill. Mrs W. R. Mayhew, Rugby street, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Miss Betti Semmens, Tweed street, is visiting Dunedin. Miss Marion Stobo. Wellington street, has left to spend a holiday in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs J. Begg, Winton, are visiting Dunedin. An interesting programme will be presented at the Southland Women’s Club by the Music Circle tonight.—Advt. Mrs H. S. Bridgewater. Mrs A. O. Davies and Mrs M. C. Fairbrother were hostesses at an afternoon yesterday in the Tudor Lounge for Mrs K. Clark, who is leaving to live in Westport. Lady Newall has consented to become Commandant-in-Chief of the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments. Tills office was formerly held by Miss E. P. Tennant, who resigned because of ill-health. The president of the Southland Women’s Club. Mrs J. D. Gilmore, was hostess at an afternoon in the club yesterday for Mrs G. R. Milward. Members of the executive and the committees of the Play-Reading and Spinning Circles were present. OBITUARY.— The death occurred suddenly at Roslyn, Dunedin, of Mrs Agnes Marguerita (Greta) Gillies. Mrs Gillies (nee Wilson) was bom in Invercargill where she lived with her aunt. Miss E. Dummigan, Biggar street. She received her education at the South School and the Southland Girls’ High School. During the last war she went to Dunedin, where. she was employed by Braithwaites. Ltd. In 1931 she married Mr Herbert Gillies, who died seven years ago. Her brother, Mr Richard Wilson, died suddenly in Dunedin some three months ago. BUSINESS CLUB— The first meeting of the Gore Business and Professional Women’s Club was held in the Cosy Lounge, where a very representative gathering of 37 business and professional women enjoyed dinner, a social hour and community singing. The president welcomed the new members and outlined the aims of the club and the need for such an organization to discuss womens problems and further their interests in community life. The club appreciates the assistance and guidance given by Mrs Wilson, physical welfare officer, and the Gore Rotary Club. An Interesting and instructive address was given by Mrs Wilson on the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, which now functions throughout 26 countries of the world, New Zealand being one of them.

ENGAGEMENT

The engagement is announced, and a marriage arranged, between Marjorie Kathleen (Nancy) Walters, Auckland, and Trooper R. J. E. Botting, Bourke street, Invercargill.
