GERMAN SUBMARINE SUNK
(Rec. 8.45 p.m.) SAN SALVADOR (Brazil), Aug. 20. Jack Lacey, the pilot of a Catalina flying-boat, described how he sank a German submarine off the coast of Bahia after the five Brazilian ships had been sunk. Lacey was patrolling the coast when he sighted a German submarine with seven members of the crew on deck. Lacey dived and machine-gunned the submarine, which returned the fire from a deck gun. Two members of the crew of the submarine were hit and fell overhoard. The conning-tower hatch was closed so quickly that the other five remained on deck as the submarine submerged. The plane then dropped four, bombs. There was at least one direct hit, which capsized the submarine, after which oil and wreckage floated on the surface.
