ATHLETICS HOLD UP MILITARY TRAINING
(Rec. 7.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 20, “Anything Commander Tunney says is worthy of serious attention,” said Mr Robert P. Patterson, Under-Secretary of War, at a Press conference in Washington when asked about b statement by Gene Tunney, former world boxing champion, that: “You cannot train a man to be a fighter playing football and baseball.”
Commander Tunney criticized the public clamour for Army and Navy athletic extravaganzas such as allstar baseball and football, and said: “We have just got to stop this athletic boondoggling. It has not place in the war or the preparations for the war.”
Mr Patterson said constant study was being given to cutting down spectator sports which drew upon athletes in military training.
