AVERAGE OF £5/9/- A HEAD

Southland investments In National Savings total £394,515, or an average of £5/9/a head of population in the district. These figures have been disclosed by an analysis of the investments made by the district organizer (Mr W. G. Nield). The number of National Savings accounts in the province is 18,333, equal to 25 per cent, of the population or just over one account for each of 18,176 households in Southland. Six post office centres report that 100 per cent, of their population, or more, have National Savings accounts. The highest percentage of accounts apd the highest average investment is credited to Waikaka, where the total number of accounts is 166 per cent, of the population and the average investment on a population basis is £24/1/-. Mr Nield stated that a special effort was being made to raise the number of National Savings accounts in Southland from 18,333 to the next objective of 20,000, He expressed the hope that backward towns would make big efforts to improve their positions and thereby ensure the regular raising of the weekly National Savings quotas, which were fixd on th basis of savings 5/- a houshold each week.
