Sporting LEADING OWNERS FOR SEASON
SOUTHLAND HORSES’ SUCCESSES It is not often that a team from W. E. Hazlett’s stable returns empty-handed from an Otago or Southland meeting, but the unexpected happened at the Dunedin Winter meeting. Messrs J. S. and W. E. Hazlett started three horses at Wingatui, but not, one ran into a place. In spite of that break the Hazlett Brothers are at the head of the winning owners in New Zealand for the present season with £4710/10/-, just ahead of the Aucklanders, Messrs E. R. Davis and O. Nicholson £4687. Mr E. N. Fitzgerald, who was on top last season with £9913, is tenth at present with £2848. Southland-owned and trained horses have had a most successful season at meetings in the Otago and Southland districts this season, and no fewer than 10 of the 17 owners who have won over £5OO in stakes belong to the southern province. The leading winning owners are:—J. S. and W. E. Hazlett £2595, Dr J. E. Rogers £1550, Price Bros. £ll5O, E. N. Didham £920, D. M. Tweedie £B3O, J. Burnett £823, J. A. Brown £740, F. J. Boyle £67Q, James Lindsay £650, P. J. Boyle £630, D. J. McDonald £630, H. G. Mason £625, J. Graham £6OO, Mrs D. Levin £590, A. Syme £575, T. Coltman £525, and T. Baird £505. Southlanders also head the list of winning horses in the two districts, the principal winners being Southern Sail £l4lO, Secret Flight £lOB5. Bashful Lady £823, Anglo-Irish £505, Fidelis £495, and Fleet Street £495. Limbohm Limbohm. Grand National Hurdles winner of 1940, is to be raced in steeplechases this season. Chatmos Chatmos has won eight races—six of them at Ashburton, and the other two at Addington. \ • Slayer Slayer was not nominated for the Wellington meeting, but is quite all right after his gruelling race in the Otago Steeplechase, and will be a starter again in the Grand National Steeplechase, all going well in the meantime. Favourites The ruling favourites for the Wellington Steeplechase are Dozie Boy and Master Lackham, and Evan’s Head for the Trentham Hurdles. Tha last-named has had only three starts this season and won each time. He is a four-year-old gelding by Nightly from Morning Quest. Noble Fox The running of Noble Fox, ridden by P* Atkins, in the Manawatu Winter Cup, was the subject of a judicial inquiry instituted by the chief stipendiary steward, Mr C. Gomer, but the stewards decided to take no action. Winterset Winterset, favourite for the Victorian Grand National Steeplechase, won at Flemington the other day, but cannot be rehandicapped for the big race. ‘He was originally weighted at the maximum (12.7). Winterset has a remarkable record. He has won tlie only three cross-country races in which he has started, and each time carried 12.7.
Sally Lunn . Sally Lunn and Black Renarde remain in both the open flat racfes on the first day at Trentham. This is possible because the acceptances came within the safety number, and restrictions were unnecessary. It is anticipated that Sally Limn will tackle the mile journey in the Whyte Handicap.
Depleted Ranks The ranks of good class steeplechasers have been considerably depleted this season. Most serious was the retirement of Clarion Call, the Dominion’s best jumper, and the breakdown of Streamline. All Irish, a brilliant lepper a couple of seasons ago when he won the Great Northern-Winter double —has lost all form, and Conflagration is under a cloud. Astral Flame has had to be spelled, and Enjoyment broke his back at Awapuni. Dozie Boy Dozie Boy won £2OOO during his Tara-naki-Auckland tour. Not much more than a pony, Dozie Boy has never shown much ability to carry weight, and 10.8 stopped him completely in the Winter Steeplechase at Auckland. He is a more reliable jumper than a year ago, and may be able to improve his record before the jumping campaign ends. High Class It is reported that when High Class carried 10.2 into second place at Awapuni from No. 22 at the barrier, one of his plates had shifted before the race. He will be a popular candidate at Trentham. Living in Luxury The world’s champion trotter, Greyhound, 1.55%, has been retired from the race track to a farm recently purchased by his owner, Mr E. J. Baker. An American paper describes the farm as one of the best in the whole country. It consists of 360 acres enclosed by a chestnut rail fence. The improvements, representing an outlay of 200,000 dollars, include an enclosed, heated and insulated arena 80ft by 200 ft, equipped with two glassed-in enclosures at the stable entrance with all modern conveniences for visitors. The main stable comprises 24 boxes, harness and carriage rooms, wash rooms and a modem office. .Greyhound occupies a special box stall in this great stable, and his admirers are asked to visit him.
“Tartar” Julian Dead Deep regret will be felt in sporting circles throughout the Dominion at the death at Auckland of Mr Arthur James Julian. Mr Julian, who was 62 years of age, was one of Auckland’s best known and popular trainers, but it was as a horseman before he took up training that he was more widely known. Apprenticed to Mr J. B. Williamson, Arthur Julian, or "Tartar,” as he was popularly called, quickly showed ability in the saddle, and it was not long before he was recognized as a first-class rider. He piloted innumerable winners, but was never fortunate enough to be on the winner of the Auckland Cup or Great Northern Derby, although he won the Great Northern Guineas on Dunborve. In his later years Mr Julian was private trainer to the. late Mr R. T. Reid, and for that sportsman won the Great Northern Hurdles with Prince of Orange in 1936. The deceased is survived by his wife. McGrath, trainer of Beau Vite, said his horse and Kindergarten were harshly handicapped in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. “If there’s a good three-year-old about neither of them will have a chance in tlie Melbourne Cup,” he said. "I think the handicappers make a big mistake in asking good horses to carry such big weights over long journeys.” McGrath considers that Beau Vite is better off than Kindergarten. He said he did not expect Kindergarten would be asked to give Beau Vite weight.
