NAZI NERVOUSNESS

(8.0.W.) RUGBY, June 16. German nervousness over the possibility of an Allied offensive in the west is betrayed by the present feverish activities in France, details of which have reached Free French headquarters in London. The Maginot Line is being reversed. A large number of workers is engaged in turning the guns westward, while new fortifications are being built on the Rhine.

The German High Command has ordered the establishment of special anti-commando units, whose personnel are equipped for hand-to-hand fighting. They are stationed in various big ports, including St. Nazaire. At the same time Pierre Laval’s policy of gradually imposing at least semi-military collaboration with the Nazis on the French people has borne the first fruits. The Vichy Government has been authorized by the Armistice Commission to instal anti-aircraft defences throughout the unoccupied zone, also to put up barrage balloons round Vichy itself. The scheme’s one drawback is that Vichy has no balloons.
