BRITISH CONVOYS REACH TOBRUK AND MALTA
(United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 16. One Italian 10,000 ton cruiser and two destroyers were sunk in a great sea and air battle which raged in the Mediterranean for four days while two great British convoys fought their way to Tobruk and Malta. In addition, a six-inch gun cruiser was set on fire, one was damaged and another was hit. American Liberator bombers flown by pilots of the United States Air Forces took part in the encounter. It is announced in London that the convoys delivered their supplies to the two fortresses, but it is emphasized that in actions of such magnitude losses must have been suffered by the British forces. Air-power played a decisive part in the defeat of the Italian naval squadrons which tried to get among the convoys and bring about their destruction.
