Mr P. L. Porter, Wellington, assistant general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, arrived in Invercargill yesterday on a short business visit. Mr Charles E. Begg, general manager of Charles Begg and Company, arrived in Invercargill from Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr W. M. Singleton, director of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, is visiting Invercargill to attend the annual conference of the South Island Dairy Association today. Mr Singleton will also attend the annual meeting of the Southland and Otago Dairy Factory Managers’ Union today. Major A. J. Neil, who recently returned from overseas, has arrived in Invercargill. Major Neil went overseas with the Ist Echelon and is to resume military duties in New Zealand in the near future. Mr Russell W. Reid, of the National Film Unit, Wellington, will arrive in Invercargill by the express this afternoon on a short visit to the city. Mr C. A. Livingstone has tendered his resignation as foreman of the Invercargill city reserves. The resignation has been accepted by the City Council. Mr G. L. Ferguson, Dominion officer in charge of cadets of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, who has been on a visit to Invercargill, returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. Messrs H. H. Meredith, of Waimate (chairman), W. Bryant, of Henley, F. G. Harris, of O’Kains Bay, A. Johnson, of Temuka, and W. Lee, of Goodwood (directors), and W. G. Wight, of Dunedin (secretary), of the South Island Dairy Association, and a number of factory representatives from Otago and Canterbury arrived in Invercargill by the express yesterday to attend the annual conference of the association today. Captain G. Herbert, of Queenstown, who is to take a post in the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve, was bidden farewell at his home recently. The Mayor, Dr W. A. Anderson, referred to Captain Herbert’s service with the Boy Scouts, the Home Guard, the Queenstown Carnival Committee, the Borough Council, the golf club and the patriotic and farewell committees. LieutenantColonel P. Mackenzie handed the guest of honour a wallet containing notes as a mark of appreciation of his services.
