UNIFORM TAXATION IN AUSTRALIA

(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, June 12.

The Federal Government has decided that the 1942-43 Budget to be presented in August will not provide for an increase in the rates of taxation for indi' iduals or companies beyond those embodied in the unitorm taxation legislation recently passed by Parliament. The Prime Minister, Mr John Curtin, in announcing this, said also that it was not proposed to apply any furflier indirect taxation in the 1942-43 Budget. The uniform taxation will mean increases in total direct taxes in some states, but in New South Wales it will result in slight decreases for most income groups.

Argument on the validity of the Federal uniform taxation scheme will be heard by the Full High Court on June 22. The Chief Justice Sir John Latham, said a speedy disposal of the issues was desirable because of their great public importance.
