CHINESE RESIST STRONGLY

FIERCE BATTLE FOR CHUHSIEN (Rec. 8 p.m.) CHUNGKING, June 8. The Japanese who penetrated the outskirts of Chuhsien suffered heavy casualties. Fighting is raging with increasing ferocity and the besieged Chinese garrison is still holding out inside Chuhsien’s ancient walls. "The Japanese force advancing eastward from Nanchang is attacking Tungsiang, 75 miles to the south-east. Heavy fighting is reported on the northwest front of Inner Mongolia, 340 miles west of Peiping. The Chinese forces which successfully completed their withdrawal from Burma have made contact with the main Chinese Army in Yunnan, according to General Lung Yun, Governor of Yunnan. However the army authorities asserted that only those forces needing reorganization and reequipping had returned. Tokyo radio announced that the official Japanese spokesman had declared: “Japan has not used poison gas so far and does not intend to use it unless international laws are violated by the enemy.” RAID ON RANGOON United States bombers made their first daylight attack on Rangoon. Despite monsoon conditions, heavy antiaircraft fire and Japanese fighters, the attack was pressed home. ' The Royal Air Force again attacked Akyab yesterday and bombed and machine-gunned a merchantman from a low level. A jetty was probably hit. Rain obscured observation. Other bombers attacked Homalin from a low level.
