SMUT DISEASE OF ONIONS

DANGER FROM N.Z. IMPORTS (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 7. Smut disease of onions is liable to be imported into New South Wales from New Zealand among large supplies now coming from the Dominion. The Acting Government Biologist, Dr C. J. Magee, in making this statement warned growers not to plant any such onions for seed. He said the disease had never got a hold in New South Wales and every effort would be made to keep it out, but with all the care in the world it was almost inevitable that some infected bulbs would gain entrance. Arrangements were being made with the New Zealand Government to take the utmost precautions to prevent diseased onions being included in consignments, but the danger was always there.
