END OF FREEZING SEASON
ERRATIC SUPPLIES AT WORKS Erratic supplies of fat lambs at the freezing works suggest that the end of the season is at hand. Arrangements have been made for the closing of most northern works, but no decision has yet been made in Southland, although the companies consider that present supplies do not warrant the works remaining open for more than a short period to clean up the remaining lambs offering. It is reported that the Bumside and Balclutha works will close at the end of next week, and most Canterbury works will close at the end of this week. Supplies to the Southland works are now insufficiently heavy to justify daily killing, and lambs are slaughtered only on certain days of the week. Even with this arrangement it is impossible to get in a full day’s killing. The general manager of the Southland Frozen Meat Company (Mr Alex Derbie) stated yesterday that the season had reached a stage when it was desirable that farmers holding lambs which they wished killed before the closing date should inform the companies of the numbers they had on hand. Killing arrangements should be made promptly so that a decision could be reached about the closing date. The present indications were that the season could be closed within a fortnight.
