The broadcast, which was picked up by monitors of the Australian Department of Information, says: “From St. Agnes’s Church to the Post Office, from the Hohestrasse to the Brietestrasse, the Opera House and particularly the Severin district are all one mass of ruins. All telephonic communications have been cut off. Heartrending scenes were witnessed. Two thousand five hundred barracks and 3000 tents have been placed at the disposal of the civil defence organization to house the homeless. All reserve stores have been thrown open to feed the wretched victims.”
