AMERICA TO BUILD MORE CARRIERS

(Rec, 8.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 31. Mr Carl Vinson, chairman of the House of Representatives Naval Affairs Committee, indicated that the Navy will soon ask for a new niulti-million dollar programme of aircraft-carrier construction. The new programme will be imposed on the existing programme, under which at least 11 aircraft-carriers are building to augment the seven, aircraft-carriers now > operating. Mr Vinson declared that the Navy would balance the increased carrier force with more destroyers, long-range submarines and fighting ships. He added that the programme did not signalize the extinction of battleships, which still retained their importance.
