LIBERTY BONDS SOLD IN CITY

Within less than two hours yesterday morning more than £2OOO towards Southland’s Liberty Loan quota was secured by the sale of Liberty Bonds and by subscriptions to the loan. At the Town Hall the Deputy-Mayor (Mr A. Wachner) and Mr D. Harris personally sold bonds between 11 o’clock and noon and disposed of bonds to the value of £521. This included one lot of 100, one of 60, three of 50 and two of 25. At the Chief Post Office Mr W. G. Nield, organizer of the campaign, and Mr W. Hulse, chief accountant, sold £4bb worth of bonds and secured subscriptions for the loan valued at £ll2O. The total amount secured was £2107. The campaign has been extended a day and will now close tomorrow. Special efforts will be made to raise another £50,000 which is required so that Southland’s quota of £500,000 may be reached or exceeded. .During the next two days the public will be asked to make their final contributions to the loan. Outside the Chief Post Office a Redwing aeroplane will be located as a reminder of the appeal. Mr Nield stated last night that he hoped all would realize their responsibilities and take advantage of the offers of favourable terms for securing bonds. He urged workers to take advantage of the readiness of many employers to advance the cost of Liberty Bonds on a system of repayment by deductions from wages over a period. DOMINION FIGURES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 1. The Reserve Bank has announced that the time for receiving applications for the Liberty Loan has been extended by one day. It now closes on Wednesday and applications mailed with the postmark June 3 will be accepted. Subscriptions tonight totalled £13,616,170, leaving approximately £1,400,000 still to be subscribed. The grand total to date comprises 7613 applications for 2i per cents., aggregating £4,997,960 and 8488 applications for 3 per cents., aggregating £8,618,210. Large amounts recently received or promised include: Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Shaw, Savill and New Zealand Shipping Company, £50,000 each; Port Line Ltd., £40,000; New Zealand Labour Party, £lO,OOO.
