TRIPLE DEAD HEATS IN NEW ZEALAND The triple dead heat recorded in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday—Full Hand, Red Dash and Myarion—is not the first of its kind in New Zealand. There have been several others. The last one on record (bef re Saturday) was the dead heat between Lowenberg (B. H. Morris), Tidewaiter (A. C. Messervy) and Settlement (C. Stokes) in the Islington Handicap at the Grand National meeting in 1939. On that occasion Tidewaiter returned a win dividend of less than the amount invested. Probably the first recorded triple dead heat in New Zealand was that in the Flying Handicap at Stratford in January 1893, when Shield (Cudd), Mutiny (Crocker) and Chatterbox (Knight) could not be separated at the post, but in the run-off Shield beat Mutiny by a neck. In the City Handicap (one mile and aquarter) at Ellerslie in November 1894, First Nelson (Hodson), Ben Godfrey (Creamer) and Forme (Hall) dead-heated and in the run-off First Nelson finished in front of the other two. OLD FORBURY PARK The first triple dead-heat to be recorded on a South Island course was run on the old Forbury Park galloping course about 50 years ago. Sir William, Huntingdon and Little Fraud were the dead-heaters. At the Auckland winter meeting in June 1903, then known as the North New Zealand Grand National meeting, St. Olga (Chaafe), Paratutu (George) and Miss Lottie (W. C. Ring) finished together in the Glasgow Handicap .(seven furlongs). In January 1920 at Trentham, Nursing Sister (A. Reed), Hepta (R. S. Bagby) and Borealis (G. Young) dead-heated in the Ruapehu Handicap, and by a remarkable coincidence eight years later another triple dead heat was recorded in the Ruapehu Handicap. The horses were Broadacre (A. E. Ellis), Polydectes (F. Waddell) and Ganymede (W. Brown).
Tualine (R. Reed), Tiega (L. G. Morris), and Crown Gem (Daly) were the deadheaters in the Welter Handicap at the Napier Park autumn meeting in 1926, and the last of similar, performances to be recorded in the North Island before Saturday was that in the Pukekohe Handicap at Franklin in March 1929 when Vali (R. S. Bagby), Gemlight (R. McTavish) and Respirator (A. Parsons) crossed the finishing line together. Dunedin Entries Today Nominations for the Dunedin winter meeting on June 20 close at 5 p.m. today.
Dozie Boy Dozie Boy, winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase, looked to have a good chance of success in that event last year, but he Tell at a critical stage of the race. He beat all but Astral Flame in the Grand National Steeplechase and showed a week ago that he was in rare form by winning the Te Rapa steeples. He will have a big following if he tackles the Grand National country this year.
Leading Jockey T. J. Boyle, the well-known Southland steeplechase rider, with 12 wins, heads the list of successful cross-country horsemen in New Zealand this season. Hurdles Winner Emdale (Lapidary-Lunette) was having his twenty-first start for the season when he brought off a surprise win in the Great Northern Hurdles on Saturday. He had not been further back than fourth in his last six starts before Saturday and his win in the Great Northern gave him five wins for the season. Last season he won one race in seven starts.
