YOUNG SOLDIER’S DEATH
(PA..) WELLINGTON, May 31. A young soldier travelling on Saturday from his home at Hastings to camp to begin training was killed when he attempted to board his train after it had restarted at Paekakariki. He was William Ralph Isdale, aged 18, of Hastings. The accident happened at 6.10 p.m. Isdale, who was in uniform, attempted to board the train near the front, but fell under it, most of the carriages passing over him. He was dead when picked up. He has a brother living in Hastings and another brother in the camp that was his destination.
CYCLIST KILLED (P.A.) WHANGAREI, May 30. Colliding with an Auckland service bus this morning, a cyclist, James Valentine Chapman, aged 41, married with four children, of Otaika, received fractures of the skull, right thigh and both bones in the right leg from which he died before admission to hospital. The accident occurred at the intersection of Portland road and the Auckland highway. The service bus driver was Oliver James Sorensen.
