SHOWERS OF RAIN AND SLEET Bitterly cold conditions have been experienced at Gore and throughout taste, n Southland since the week-end. There was no improvement yesterday and heavy showers pf rain and sleet fell during the day. All district rivers are running above normal, but no reports of any flooding have been received. At Gore yesterday the Mataura river was two feet above normal and was rising, xhe river at Waikaia was 18 inches above normal and at Glenary six inches. Snow was falling at Glenary yesterday. The river readings at Balfour and Garston were three feet above normal and four inclies above

normal respectively. There was a heavy fall of snow at Dipton on Monday, but it had all cleared away yesterday. OUTBREAK OF FIRE— A lean-to shed attached to Mr W. D. F. King’s fish depot in Ordsal street was partially gutted by fire about 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. A considerable amount of equipment was also damaged. The building is owned by Mr I King and is used by Mr E. Coventry as a , cooking room. The Gore Fire Brigade was called and it soon had the flames under | control. It is thought that the outbreak was caused by fat catching alight and spreading up the walls. _ . , . LATE MR c. MILLER— The funeral of Mr Christopher Miller, who died suddenly at Gore on Monday, was attended yesterday by a big number of people, including representatives of the Gore Returned Services Association. Home Guard and Gore Pipe Band, who attended his funeral yesterday. The services at the. house and graveside

were conducted by the Rev. W. W. Powell. More than 50 cars were in the cortege. CROQUET CLUB— The Gore Croquet Club Is in a good financial position, according to the report presented at the annual meeting Ox ui. c.uo .->■ night. The report ' stated that a successful year had been experienced and that the club had a memI bership of 39. Mrs James Ritchie presided , and 17 members were present. The follow- ’ Ing office-bearers were elected: Patron, Mr W. D. Shelton: president, Mrs R. P. Neale; vice-presidents, Mesdames V. Burgess and S. B. Taylor: secretary and treasurer, Mrs W. T. Trusler; club captain and handicapper, Mrs G. McLeod; committee, Mesdames J. Ritchie, R. W. McCreath, A. T. Pettigrew, L. G. Thomson, F. J, Murray and G. Peterson: green and selection committee, Mesdames Neale, Trusler and McLeod; auditor, Mr W. D. Shelton; delegate to association, I Mrs Trusler. It was decided to give £3/3/- | to the patriotic funds.
