CROPPING PROGRAMME FOR SEASON
The effort to obtain a survey of the position of the production of linen flax, oats and wheat in the Southland province was carried a step further at the annual meeting of the Orawia branch of the Farmers’ Union on Monday night, when a committee was formed to make a tabulation of that area. After an address by Mr F. E. Carter, provincial organizer, the meeting expressed the opinion that so long as the labour problem could be met to some degree there was no doubt that the farming industry would fulfil the request for essential production. On the motion of E. K. Sim it was resolved to offer for the consideration of the provincial conference a suggestion that to make up for any shortages there might be in the wheat position next year, nothing but whole-meal bread should be made. The lack of a threshing mill in the district was mentioned, and it was decided to endeavour to make one available for next season. The meeting expressed its disapproval of the new system of payment for rabbitskins, members stating that not only did it affect the labour position in the summer months, but the farmer who did his own trapping in the winter, the only time available, had to accept a reduced price to subsidize the summer trapping. The following office-bearers were elected: —President, Mi- E. K. Sim; vicepresident, Mr D. McGibbin; secretary, Mr W. McGibbin; auditor, Mr D. Young, senior.
