MAYOR RESIGNS OFFICE

MR MARTIN'S DECISION

Because of continued ill-health, Mr J. R. Martin has resigned as Mayor of the city. At last r/ight’s meeting of the City Council the following letter, addressed to the town clerk, was received from Mr Martin: —

“Please accept my resignation as Mayor of the city on account of continued ill-health. I would be very ungrateful indeed if I did not recognize the very liberal way the council has treated me with regard to leave of absence during my illness. lam very much indebted to the Deputy Mayor for carrying on the work while I have been away, more especially as he has refused to be compensated in any way for his services on my behalf. My association with the council during my term of office, both as Deputy Mayor and Mayor, has been a very pleasant and interesting experience. I wish to thank you most sincerely for the very great help you have been to me. Your advice has always been sound, diplomatic and cheerfully given. Please convey to your office staff my appreciation of their efficiency and thanks for their assistance.”

The council carried the following motion moved by the Deputy Mayor, Cr A. Wachner:—“That this council places on record its appreciation of the excellent services given to the city over a period of years by Mr J. R. Martin, first as a councillor, then as deputy Mayor and latterly as Mayor. The members of the council and citizens generally will learn with regret that his illness has caused his retirement, and it is our hope that he may be again restored to health and then enabled later again to take part in civic affairs. The town clerk to be directed to convey the purport of this resolution to Mr Martin and at the same time, to express to Mrs Martin our appreciation of the valuable work she performed while Mayoress of the city.”
