Squadron Leader W. H. Shepherd, South Island Divisional Commander of the Air Training Corps, is visiting Invercargill. Mr F. M. Corkill, Invercargill city engineer, was elected a vice-presi-dent of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers at the annual meeting held in Wellington last week. Mr R. P. H. Hewat, of Invercargill, has been awarded the New Zealand University’s Senior Scholarship in Law for 1942. Mr Hewat, who also completed his B.A. degree at Otago University last year, is now serving with the Otago Battalion. He was educated at the Southland Boys’ High School and Christ’s College. Mr J. O. Webber, of Rangiora, has been appointed headmaster of the Gore Public School in place of Mr R. G. Watson, who has been appointed headmaster of the new Pasadena Intermediate School, Auckland. Wing Commander H. C. Bevan, R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve, has relinquished his appointment as military secretary and comptroller of the household to the Governor-General in order to take up an appointment overseas. Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, Royal Fusiliers, has succeeded Wing Commander Bevan and been promoted to the rank of major.—P.A. Mr M. A. F. Barnett and Mr R. G. Simmers have been granted temporary commissions as wing-commander and squadron leader respectively in the special duties branch of the New Zealand Air Force, states a Gazette notice. —P.A.

Mr and Mrs R. K. Hogg, of Otekaike, North Otago, have received word that their son, who was recently awarded the D.F.C., was promoted to the rank of squadron leader in December last. He is flying the latest model of Wellington bomber, and considers it a fine machine. The crews of his flight consist of men from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Great Britain. Mrs A. J. Dunn has received cabled advice that her husband, Aircraftman Dunn, of the New Zealand Fighter Squadron, is safe and well in Australia.
