LICENSING BREACHES AT WINTON

Several breaches of the Licensing Act were dealt with by Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., at the Winton Magistrate’s Court yesterday. George William Walters, licensee of the Winton Hotel, for selling liquor after hours was convicted and fined £b, costs 10/-. Maxwell McGregor, manager of the Winton Hotel, was prosecuted for supplying liquor to William Chrystal after closing hours. Mr O. A. B. Smith appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. The constable stated in evidence that he visited the Winton Hotel at 10 p.m. on February 7, and found seven men, including McGregor, in the sitting-room of the hotel. There was a two-gallon jar of beer in front of Chrystal. For the defence it was stated that it was usual for Chrystal to get a two-gallon jar of beer every Saturday. He» called at the bar during open hours with the jar and money and called later for the beer. The Magistrate stated he was satisfied that McGregor had supplied the beer to Chrystal. The defendant was convicted and fined £4/10/-, with costs 10/-. John Robert Todd, licensee of the Railway Hotel, Winton, was charged with exposing liquor for sale after hours, also selling liquor after hours, and opening his premises for the sale of liquor, after hours. The defendant, who was represented by Mr G. R. Martin, of Gore, pleaded not guilty. In evidence. Constable Wood stated that he visited the Railway Hotel twice after 6 o'clock and assisted in clearing the bar. He returned at 6.40 and found 30 men there, some of whom were not boarders. At 915 when he called everything was in order, but the licensee adopted a hostile attitude. The defendant said he had asked each man if he was a boarder before admitting him to the bar. The defendant was convicted and fined £6 with costs 12/- on the second charge.
