Sporting CERTISSIMUS’S RECORD

THIRTEEN WINS FOR £2390 IN STAKES

Certissimus, whose death occurred on Tuesday night, was probably the greatest trotter of his age ever raced in New Zealand and, although only four years old, he had attained a mark not gained by many horses years older in racing experience. He first appeared at a matinee meeting on the Washdyke racecourse, where he created a favourable impression by putting up a good performance against a high-class trotter in Jenny Guy. In his first appearance at a totalizator meeting, in 1940, he defeated Westcliffe very easily, and since then he started 19 times for 12 firsts and two seconds.

Certissimus, who was by Quite Sure from Royden’s Pride, had been racing just under 15 months, and during that time he had won £2390 in stakes for his owner, Mr J. K. Teahen.

Distance Too Far Hearth took the lead in the Dunedin Cup soon after the start and was responsible for a solid pace. He kept the lead until the straight was reached, where he began to tire and stopped badly, finishing fifth about six lengths behind the winner. Eighteenth Success

When Straight Bat carried the Clifford colours to victory in the Champagne Stakes on Saturday it was their eighteenth success in this race, since it was inaugurated in 1878. The first Clifford horse to win the Champagne Stakes was Cynisca, who won in 1889. Good Acceptances

Excellent acceptances have been received for the annual meeting of the Invercargill Trotting Club on Saturday, The acceptances total 120 compared with 125 last year and 116 in 1940. In the principal event, the Southland Handicap, 10 horses have been paid up for, against nine last year, and it will be necessary to run the Trial Handicap in two divisions, as the number on the limit exceeds the safety number of 15 by 10. Miss Waitarerc After two good performances at Hokitika the Saturday before, where she finished second in the Anniversary Handicap, and third in the Stewards’ Highweight, Miss Waitarere was rewarded with an easy win in the Cobden Hack Handicap at Greymouth last Saturday. Miss Waitarere. who is a six-year-old mare by Danilof from Oread, was one of the leaders throughout and was not troubled to beat Roadsider by two lengths. Handicapping In the W.R.C. Handicap, Arctic Dawn will meet Gladynev on 111 b and Hearth on 121 b better terms for beating them in the Dunedin Cup, states The Otago Daily Times. This most undesirable state of affairs has been brought about by Arctic Dawn carrying a stone over weight in the Dunedin Cup. Lord Nuffield

When Lord Nuffield became hopelessly left in the Publicans’ Handicap at Wingatul he was not sent after the field, but merely followed. He came out again in the Stewards’ Handicap, and after being prominent all the way under 9.11 he failed in the last couple of strides to hold off Wild Fox, who came with a strong run. Provincial

Under Rule 314 Provincial has been handicapped 84yds in the Murihiku Handicap and 60yds in the Waikiwi Handicap for the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday instead of 36yds and limit as previously published in the handicaps.

Canterbury Easter Meeting The committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday decided that the usual first day’s programme of the club’s autumn meeting will be held on the Riccarton racecourse on Easter Monday. Although the fixture is likely to be run at a loss, the committee decided to give the same amount in stakes, £3575, as last year. The stake for the Autumn Plate was reduced from £4OO to £3OO, and that for the Sockburn Handicap increased from £5OO to £6OO. The distance for the latter race was changed from nine furlongs to a mile and a-quarter. The distance of the concluding event, the Papanui Hack Handicap, was increased from six to seven furlongs.

Kindergarten at Trentham Kindergarten arrived at Trentham at the week-end and his work on Tuesday was supervised by R. S. Bagby, who was in charge of the horse throughout his three-year-old career, and took him to Australia last spring. Kindergarten is engaged in the North Island Challenge Stakes on Saturday, and he looks as well today as ever he looked at any previous stage of his career. He was ridden on Tuesday by P. Burgess and galloped five furlongs by himself in smart time, and though he has not raced since October he will be a fit horse on Saturday. As Foreign Coin is not to run in the Challenge Stakes, P. Burgess may be his rider.
