MUTTON-BIRD SEASON

A meeting of natives interested in the mutton-bird industry was held in the Lands and Survey office this week. Permits were issued to natives and 14 supervisors for the Crown islands and the beneficially owned islands were appointed. The meeting was presided over by Mr T. Cagney, Commissioner of Crown Lands, who expressed the hope that the current season would be a successful one. The menace of cats and rats on the islands was discussed. On some islands there are large numbers of rats and on others many cats. The cats do not harm the mutton-birds, but destroy other bird-life. The season begins on April 1, and the Maoris are not allowed to land on the islands before March 15.
