STOCK SALE AT LORNEVILLE

Freezing And Butcher Ewes In Demand

Freezing and butchers’ ewes and wethers were in demand at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday. Large yardings of fat sheep and store sheep were offering and competition was keen.

Yesterday's yardings and last week’s were as follows:—

FAT SHEEP— There was a" full yarding in this section consisting mainly of ewes, the majority of which were freezing weights. Good quality wethers were in short supply. The competition for freezing ewes was quite keen and wethers and good butcher-quality ewes showed a slight improvement over the previous week. Prime quality wethers made up to 29/9, good quality medium weights 26/6 to 28/3, and lightweights 24/- to 25/6. Good quality butchers’ ewes made from 10/6 to 12/- and overweights 8/6 to 9/6, with freezing ewes from 11/- to 13/9, according to weight and quality. FAT LAMBS— There was only a small entry in the fat lamb section, the competition for which was restricted mainly to export buyers. Values were in keeping with export schedule rates. FAT CATTLE— The entry in the fat cattle section was larger than butchers’ requirements and in the absence of any material outside competition prices were easier for all classes, more particularly cows and unfinished sorts, by £1 to £l/10/- a head. Some good-quality bullocks and heifers were included, but the majority of the yarding consisted of cows of medium and unfinished sorts. Good-quality medium-weight bullocks made £l3/5/- to £l4, handy weights £ll/15/- to £l2/10/-, lightweights £lO/10/to £ll/5/-, good-quality heifers to £ll/10/-, handyweights £9/15/- to £lO/10/-, lightweights £B/5/- to £9, small £6/10/- to £7/10/-. Prime quality cows made from £9 to £9/15/-, medium £6/15/- to £7/10/-, unfinished £5/5/- to £5/15/-, aged and inferior £2/15/- to £3/10/-. STORE SHEEP— The market in the store sheep section was firm. Best two-tooth ewes made 37/-, average sorts 33/- to 35/-, with smaller sorts down to 30/-.

STORE CATTLE— The store cattle yarding was a small one and values were much the same as those ruling at recent sales. Best empty cows made up to £5/10/-, good forward condition empty cows £3/10/- to £4/10/-. and aged sorts £l. A pen of good empty heifers in forward condition made £5/15/- and well-grown three-year-old heifers sold up to £5/9/-. Prices for small calves ranged from £l/15/- to £2/5/-. McNAB STOCK SALE Four pens of sheep made up the yarding at the fortnightly McNab stock sale yesterday. A line of maiden ewes was sold at 11/6 and a pen of 60 ewe lambs realized 21/-. Rape lambs brought 18/1 and 18/10 and wether lambs sold at 18/10.
