U.S. POLICY AND FRENCH POSSESSIONS

(Rec. 5.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 2. The State Department, today, confirmed the London announcement that the United States had recognized Free French control of French Pacific possessions, including New Caledonia. It was explained that the United States policy toward French overseas territories would be governed by the manifest effectiveness of the local French authorities to protect the territories against the common enemy. The Under-Secretary of State, Mr Sumner Welles, said the statement did not include St. Pierre and Miquelon.
