ENEMY STRIKES AGAIN
AUSTRALIAN TOWNS RAIDED ATTACKS ON WYNDHAM AND BROOME (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, March 3. Western Australia has had its first air raids. The aerodromes at Wyndham and Broome were attacked almost simultaneously by Japanese planes. Bombs were dropped at Broome but at Wyndham the raiders contented themselves with using machine-guns and cannon. Some damage was caused at both places but there were no casualties. Wyndham is 450 miles southeast of Timor and Broome is 430 miles south-west of Wyndham. These are the first attacks on the Australian mainland since the raids on Darwin. The Australian Army Minister, Mr F. M. Forde, said that for security reasons no further information could be given. He added, “These raids show the growing seriousness of the war as it affects Australia. Three of our towns in the north-west have now been attacked. We must be prepared for further attacks. These attacks should make us all the more determined to put every ounce of energy into the war effort, to which everyone should make a maximum contribution.”
