AIR RAID SHELTERS FOR SCHOOLS

That school committees wishing to have air raid shelters provided at schools should consult the local authority, which received a Government subsidy of £2 for £l, was the opinion expressed by the Southland Education Board at its meeting yesterday. The Queenstown School Committee wrote asking for an outline of its responsibilities in this respect.

The chairman (Mr S. Rice) said that the board did not limit the construction of trenches if the schools wanted them. If the Queenstown children went to the public gardens they would be as safe as anywhere. The board was of the opinion that it had no authority to spend money on the erection of air raid shelters at schools, and that it was liable for damages only in cases of accidents due to the negligence of the board.
